My name is John Ross with the Art of Retouching Studio. This video is part 2 in the series of How To Succeed as a Freelancer, Self-Employment Strategies. How do you handle clients who demand that you get something done at 2AM on a Sunday? What happens when retouching styles clash?

In this video, I'll be talking about how to keep yourself sane throughout your retouching career beyond Photoshop and growing your portfolio. Because working from your home office and making money isn't all about the basics of Photoshop, it's about business. The sad thing about working as a freelancer is that thanks to the word "Free", people often think that the work you do is low cost. In their mind, they are doing YOU the favor by keeping you busy, and helping you grow your portfolio so you can start making some real money.

This mindset completely undervalues your work, forcing you to spend all your time underpaid. If you could only break out of the low-cost slump through effective freelancing strategies, you might begin living a more prosperous life. The problem lies in my past belief that the price was too high; I assumed others wouldn't pay those rates. Boy, was I wrong.

Mission, Style and Branding

April 26, 2013 by John Ross

I am frequently asked about how to move the "Personal Brand" forward. Previously, I wrote about How to Find Retouching Work, but before you find that work, how do you stand out in the crowd?

I could easily say that the first thing you need to do is create awesome work. You need to build a solid portfolio that puts you well above everyone else. Then, once you have their attention, you need to keep it. Let's see how you can do that.

11 Ways to Find Photoshop Retouching Jobs

April 10, 2013 by John Ross

Find Retouching Work

Question:
How do you continue getting new jobs and clients? This is an issue I am struggling with. Do you have any suggestions for me to get clients, jobs, etc?

Answer:
I was thinking about your question for quite a while. If I needed to start over again, what worked, and what didn't. There really aren't any overnight answers. Honestly, it all comes down to "who you know". The best advice I could give you, is that you need to be where the work is. I could also add that it comes down to going out of your way to be noticed. You can not just wait in your studio for work to knock on your door when you are just starting out. The following is what worked for getting my own studio noticed.

Problematic Smart Objects and Smart Filters

Somewhere between being lazy, and not trusting new toys, I never really tried Smart Objects, or Smart Filters. On the surface, something always felt "wrong" about using them. I could never quite put my finger on it before. Now I know the problem.

Photo Manipulation in Adobe Photoshop for Beginners

As a beginner with Photoshop, it can be easy to become lost, or otherwise confused on what steps would be best to try next. Should you start with contrast, color, or noise removal? No matter what kind of photo manipulation you’re doing, your basic steps should always be the same:

1. You should start by going to Image - Mode - 16 Bits/Channel. This is debateable, as 8-Bit often works just fine. See my video on this topic, Tonal Range & Bit Depth.
2. Create a new empty layer, and begin Spotting it.
3. To adjust the contrast, use the Levels Palette to give the image dynamic range.
4. With either Variations,  Selective Color Palette or Curves Palette, to make color corrections.
5. By using the Hue and Saturation Palette, you can give the

Photoshop Training and Getting Hired

January 3, 2011 by John Ross

Question:
I was trained at length in photo retouching by a high-end photographer. I am looking to further a career in retouching and would like to ask what you look for in a retoucher: Is there a certification or classes you require before you hire a retoucher? Can you please offer any advice on training and how I might go about finding work in retouching?
