JPG vs. RAW File Formats | Digital Fundamental Tutorial

Photoshop Tutorial - JPG vs. RAW File Formats

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 6 minutes

This Adobe Photoshop Tutorial Video compares and contrasts the JPG and RAW File Formats. Now that we’ve spent some time delving into the twists and turns of JPGs and RAWs, it’s time for us to show you some differences of the two formats when it comes to editing an actual picture.

You already know by now that because JPGs have a smaller file size, it also means that they can’t handle the same amount of information on colors as much as the RAW file can. This results to banding whenever you zoom in on a JPG photo.

Photoshop Tutorial - What is RAW File Format?

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 8 minutes

This Adobe Photoshop Tutorial Video is going into detail about what is so good about the RAW File Format. When you shoot, the picture taken by your DSLR Camera is stored in the RAW File Format, which essentially keeps your image quality exactly as the camera sees it. The Raw file is made up of ones and zeroes that your computer can process. If you know little about the Raw File Format, then you will soon discover why professionals use it... exclusively.

What Are JPGs? | Digital Fundamental Tutorial

December 18, 2013 by John Ross

Photoshop Tutorial - What Are JPGs?

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 7 minutes

In this digital world we live in, you see the ubiquitous JPEG everywhere—practically all images you can find online are in this format. Short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPEG pictures are compressed images that have the .jpg file extension. Basically, JPEGs or JPGs compress images in order to make their file sizes smaller.

The most annoying thing about sending files and pictures online or via email, is to find that your file attachments are too big; and we wouldn’t want that now, would we? Waiting all that time trying to send over files only to have them rejected due to file size…JPGs solve that issue by reducing image file sizes so that they don’t take up too much space, be it in your hard drive or USB or in your camera.

This is an Adobe Photoshop Video tutorial that explains Color Models, Color Modes, Color Spaces, and Color Profiles. This is one of the modules from the Photoshop Basic 1 Video Course. Mission, Style and Branding

April 26, 2013 by John Ross

I am frequently asked about how to move the "Personal Brand" forward. Previously, I wrote about How to Find Retouching Work, but before you find that work, how do you stand out in the crowd?

I could easily say that the first thing you need to do is create awesome work. You need to build a solid portfolio that puts you well above everyone else. Then, once you have their attention, you need to keep it. Let's see how you can do that.

11 Ways to Find Photoshop Retouching Jobs

April 10, 2013 by John Ross

Question:
How do you continue getting new jobs and clients? This is an issue I am struggling with. Do you have any suggestions for me to get clients, jobs, etc?

Answer:
I was thinking about your question for quite a while. If I needed to start over again, what worked, and what didn't. There really aren't any overnight answers. Honestly, it all comes down to "who you know". The best advice I could give you, is that you need to be where the work is. I could also add that it comes down to going out of your way to be noticed. You can not just wait in your studio for work to knock on your door when you are just starting out. The following is what worked for getting my own studio noticed.

Problematic Smart Objects and Smart Filters

Problematic Smart Objects and Smart Filters

Somewhere between being lazy, and not trusting new toys, I never really tried Smart Objects, or Smart Filters. On the surface, something always felt "wrong" about using them. I could never quite put my finger on it before. Now I know the problem.

Photoshop Tutorial - Tonal Range, Levels and Curves

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 10 minutes

This is an Adobe Photoshop Video tutorial that explains Tonal Range, and the difference between Levels and Curves. While each of these topics is technically different, they each work with the same basic principals, so I thought it would be helpful to understand them, if I covered them all at the same time. Before you seriously get started working with RAW Files, you need to understand Tonal Range, and how the different Sliders affect different aspects of the image.
