Masking with Color Range and QuickMask | Photoshop Tutorial

November 16, 2012 by John Ross

Photoshop Tutorial - Masking Simplified

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 18 minutes

Properly masking out an image in Adobe Photoshop is often done using one of the simple selection tools like Magic Wand or Lasso. This is simply the wrong approach. You should be using Color Range and the QuickMask.

In this video for beginners, I will slowly explain how to use both these tools to make simple and complex selections. This video is also an introductory lead-in to my 2 hour Photoshop Masking Tutorial. That extended video covers many expanded topics that cover the range from Beginner, Intermediate, to Advanced.

Color Spaces & Color Profiles – RGB, CMYK, sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto

Digital Fundamentals - Color Models and Color Spaces

Difference Between sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto - RGB and CMYK

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 12 minutes

This is a Digital Fundamentals Tutorial that focuses on the basic differences between sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto color profiles and RGB and CMYK color models. This video is only 12 minutes, and gives a quick overview on how each color space is designed to be used. It also gives a demonstration of how the image color can shift on different priced monitors.

I also have another video on this whole Color Model, Color Space, and Color Profile topic. This can all get very confusing. Not that it needs to be, it's just that even the people teaching it don't know what they are saying. This just opens up a level of cross information, and does not help anybody.

Corel AfterShot Pro Review

Corel AfterShot Pro Review

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 11 minutes

I want to start this review by saying that this product took me by surprise. I was expecting something that was mediocre, and I instantly fell in love with all the powerful features build right into the software. You may be thinking that I am just trying to pitch Corel AfterShot Pro to you, but I am quite serious, I genuinely love this program, and I would use it in my own studio as well. Sadly, I had already spent $600 on a competitor's solution.

Corel AfterShot Pro competantly joins together Image Cataloging Software, with a RAW Processor. This means you can keep track of thousands of images (I have over 20,000 myself), and make quick Color Correction edits without the need for any other software. Everything I could think that I wanted to do, was built right into the software. Check out the video,

Advanced Cropping an Image | Photoshop Tutorial

Photoshop Tutorial - Advanced Cropping an Image

This video is available with a Free Membership Account.
Running Time: 8 minutes

This Adobe Photoshop tutorial goes over advanced Cropping an image. Please do NOT dismiss this video because the topic is basic information for beginners. This video is NOT for beginners. Back in Adobe Photoshop CS4, they added many new features to the Crop Tool. Like most people, I just ignored all the changes. The most important change was the difference between Delete and Hide options. If you have never used the Hide option, then you need to watch this video, as it will change the way you crop images. I also cover several other tricks that you likely did not know about.

Please Note: In CS6, they split the Crop tool, into two seprate tools. The basic function remains the same, but since no one knew the one Crop tool did all

Spotting Images | Photoshop Basic Tutorial

July 8, 2011 by John Ross

Adobe Photoshop Tutorial - Spotting Images

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 5 minutes

This Adobe Photoshop tutorial describes what spotting images means, and how to do it. In short, spotting simply means that you are going to remove any extra dust spots, or other very quick dirt removal. While it usually means dust from the camera lens, it could also mean quickly removing any other sort of blemishes from the picture, like lint on clothing or freckles. Again, the real key is that it is quick, and usually takes less than 10 minutes, and less than 5 minutes is even better.

Ideally, this would be the very first thing done to an image, before any other sort of retouching is done. All you need to do is create a new layer, select one of the cloning tools, and begin removing anything that doesn't belong. Spotting Images should be done for every picture you start working on.
