Running Time: 26 minutes

For Photoshop Creative Magazine #125, they wanted me to show what Portrait Retouching is all about. There are many different styles for portraits. Depending on what you’re working on—Studio, Beauty, or Fashion pieces—you can apply darker shades, be more gritty, use bright and soft edges, or go to town with more creative approaches. Basically, your style depends on the effect that you want your final image to have. In this photo, we’re going for a Beauty Portrait tutorial, which means that I have to make the image model look flawless, but realistic.

This video is available Free for Everyone.
Running Time: 8 minutes

For Advanced Photoshop Magazine #130, I was asked to show how I create my selections. In this extended video, I'm going to show you the ins and outs of Professional Masking.

Properly masking an image with Adobe Photoshop is often done using one of the simple selection tools like Magic Wand or Lasso. This is simply the wrong approach. You should actually be using Color Range and QuickMask. If you're itching to know how I work around these tools, you've come to the right place. I'm going to let you in on the tips and tricks that I use behind the scenes in order to come up with a clean and accurate final image. Lets get started.

Running Time: 33 minutes

Welcome, readers! In this Behind the Retouching, I was commissioned for Advanced Photoshop Magazine for issue #128 to create this Architectural image. If you’ve always wondered what goes on behind the scenes during an actual photo retouching session, you’ve come to the right place.

As with my previous feature in Advanced Photoshop Magazine #126, I worked to satisfy the requirements of the client with this image. I chose this photo for the two-page spread knowing that I would need a lot of dead space for the graphic designers to work with, and there was an opportunity to play around with lens flare and various other visual techniques. To show you exactly how I arrived at the final image, let’s get down to business.

10 More Things Still Missing in Photoshop CC for Retouchers

November 2, 2014 by John Ross

Adobe has released another update to Photoshop CC. They even released a pretty interesting video showing the future of the entire suite of products. While this was a video to showcare their new partnership with Microsoft, there is plenty to look forward to. Unfortunately, I am not a graphic designer, illustrator, or video editor. I have only seen one thing out of Adobe since the initial release of CC over a year ago that I even cared about, much less used (Linked Smart Objects). Sadly, I even needed to be an advanced composite user to even care about that. My Previous Top 10 List was passed along to Adobe's Enginners by Julieanne Kost (thanks). While I don't know if anything I wrote about the first time will ever make it into Photoshop for Photographers and Retouchers, I feel it's important to keep them on their toes. Therefore, I bring to your attention 10 more things still missing in Photoshop for retouchers.
